TaylorBot Privacy Policy

TaylorBot believes in data privacy and this documents aims to outline the use of your data in an effort to be transparent. It is not written by a lawyer: it is meant to be simple and easy to understand for any TaylorBot user. By using TaylorBot, you acknowledge and agree with the content of this document. If you have any questions or inquiries, please join the TaylorBot server.

What data is collected and why?

There are only 3 reasons why TaylorBot collects your data:

  • Provide and operate TaylorBot
    • This is the core of why TaylorBot needs to collect your data, for commands to work. It is also the most straightforward and transparent use of your data. The data may include your Discord user id/username, Discord guild ids/names, Discord channel ids/names and the data you actually input for a command to work.
    • For example, when you use the /remind add command to create a reminder, your Discord user id, the text and time of your reminder is collected to be able to remind you. Once the reminder is delivered, the data is deleted.
    • Some data is collected without a direct TaylorBot interaction. This includes your joined date in a server (/server joined), the number of messages you’ve sent in a server (/server messages), the number of minutes you’ve been active in a server (/server minutes), taypoint succession activity data (/taypoints succession) and your Discord username history (/usernames show). The content of your messages is temporarily collected when you are sending messages in a server where the moderation team has enabled TaylorBot deleted/edited message logging features. Please note that this is not enabled by default and the data is only stored for 10 minutes for this specific purpose.
  • Understand and analyse how you use TaylorBot
    • This is a small part of the data TaylorBot collects. It is basic analytics such as the number of times every command has been used and is not linked to a specific user. This helps figure out what features should be improved and worked on first.
  • Diagnose and fix issues with TaylorBot
    • When you use a command, your Discord user id/username, the command name, the arguments, the date/time of use are recorded temporarily. These logs are very useful to investigate the source of bugs or service interruptions when they happen.

Third party

Your collected data is not sold or given to third-party advertisers. TaylorBot is not interested in monetizing your data in such a way and relies instead on the optional financial support of community members, who in return get access to exclusive TaylorBot Plus features, to cover its hosting costs.

By the nature of how TaylorBot operates, it is intrinsically linked with the Discord platform and consequently its privacy policy/terms of service. Consider being aware of them as well.

Some TaylorBot commands are direct integrations with other services, such as Last.fm, Urban Dictionary, Wolfram|Alpha and YouTube. Location commands send the location you provide to Google (for geocoding and timezone lookup) and to a weather data provider in order to return your local time and weather, and image search commands send your query to an external search provider. Understand that when you use these commands, the input you provide is sent to these services and as a result, it is also governed by their individual privacy policies.

TaylorBot is hosted on Microsoft Azure cloud services, which means it is a data processor for TaylorBot.

How is your data protected?

TaylorBot follows security practices to the best of our resources in order to protect its users and limit the impact of privacy incidents. This includes, but is not limited to, the encryption at rest of all collected data, the principle of least privilege and frequent dependency upgrades.

What happens in case of a privacy incident?

Consider that TaylorBot is built by a single person with limited resources. No one is 100% safe from a data breach incident. If such an event occurs, TaylorBot will be as transparent as possible and clearly communicate who is affected by the incident, the impact of the incident and how it will be avoided going forward.

What control do you have on your data?

The majority of your data is set, viewed and deleted directly through TaylorBot commands and you have full control over it. For example, when you use /lastfm set to register your Last.fm username, you can, at any time, use the corresponding /lastfm clear to unregister it from TaylorBot. This data is instantly deleted and not retained.
